Why does my child understand Spanish but not speak it?

Because although parents do a great job speaking Spanish at home with their children, if Spanish isn’t relevant outside the home, it loses ground to the dominant language—the one they use at school, with friends, and on TV.

This is common in many Spanish-speaking families abroad, where second-generation kids speak Spanish only with their grandparents. At first, they understand and reply with short phrases like “hola” and “sí.” But over time, Spanish becomes a passive language: they understand it but don’t speak it.
